Tehachapi Mountain Festival 5K/10K Runs
Aug. 19, 2006

Who ever heard of a 6.1K race? Well, it was supposed to be a 5K as usual, but the organizers failed to mark the course at a critical early turn and the youngster they sent to turn runners around the corner didn't understand what he was supposed to do. The result was that runners ran about 7/10ths of a mile longer than a 5K , which works out to 6.1K.

Fifteen HDRs were among the 200 participants in the 2006 Tehachapi Mountain Festival runs, which included 1K, 5K and 10K races. Six HDRs chose the 5K - which turned out to be about 6.1 K due to the organizers' failure to mark a critical early turn and the youngster they sent out to turn runners around the corner didn't understand what he was supposed to do - and another nine ran the 10K. Most of the HDRs picked up age-group awards for their efforts.

Although he couldn't run the 2006 edition of the TMF runs due to undergoing surgery only two days prior, Alan Brown stationed himself and his camera on the final turn to record several HDRs as they headed into the finish chute.

Ralph Furness may have slowed down, but he ran well enough to pick up first in his age group.

Jesse "Muscles" Williams took second in his age group and ninth overall in the 10K.

Carmen Albanes' familiar visor provided plenty of shade on a sunny morning.

Looking like the Sheik of Araby, "Boron John" Carey heads for the 10K finish.

Mike Choate picked up the pace as he neared the 10K finish chute.

Jim Dudley had reason to smile - he was under 1:00 for the 10K.

Roger "Woody" Wood was a bit slower than usual, but still took first in his 10K age group.

Running the TMF 10K has been a long-time tradition for John Swallow, whose bib number almost matched his age!

With his 60th birthday only a few weeks away, John Howard just cruised through the 10K course.
